Every VeeCare instrument is hand-forged from our proprietary steel blend and hand-inspected before it ships. Follow these practices to protect that edge, finish, and precision for years of clinical use.

This guide covers general best practices for stainless steel dental surgical instruments. It supplements — and does not replace — your facility's infection control protocols and local regulatory requirements (CDC, HTM 01-05, or your national dental board guidelines).

Step 01

Immediate Post-Use Handling

  • Do not allow blood, saline, or debris to dry on instruments — rinse or keep moist until cleaning if there will be a delay before processing.
  • Place hinged instruments (forceps, needle holders, pliers) in the open position for transport and sterilization.
  • Avoid dropping or stacking instruments carelessly; sharp edges and fine tips are easily damaged on impact with other metal.
Step 02

Cleaning Before Sterilization

  • Manually clean or use an ultrasonic bath with a detergent specifically formulated for stainless steel dental instruments.
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water after cleaning to remove all detergent residue before sterilization.
  • Dry instruments fully before packaging — trapped moisture during sterilization storage promotes corrosion.
Step 03

Chemicals to Avoid

Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, not corrosion-proof. The following will pit, stain, or otherwise damage the surface:

Never use on stainless steel
  • Sodium hypochlorite (bleach)
  • Chlorine-based disinfectants
  • Tartaric acid / tartar removers
  • Aqua regia
  • Sulfuric acid
  • Hydrochloric acid
  • Mercury salts
  • Potassium permanganate
  • Potassium thiocyanate
  • Saline (NaCl) soaking

Use only cleaning and disinfecting agents specifically labelled for stainless steel surgical/dental instruments, and follow the manufacturer's mixing instructions exactly.

Step 04

Sterilization (Autoclave)

Standard steam sterilization parameters for stainless steel instruments, per CDC guidance:

  • Do not overload the autoclave — instruments need space between them for steam to fully penetrate every surface.
  • Use appropriate chemical and, periodically, biological indicators to verify each cycle, per your facility's protocol.
  • Always confirm the correct cycle and duration against your specific autoclave manufacturer's instructions.
Step 05

Sharpening & Edge Care

  • Curettes, elevators, and luxators perform best — and are gentler on tissue — when kept sharp; a dull edge requires more force and increases the risk of slipping.
  • Sharpen with the stone/technique appropriate to the instrument's bevel and steel grade; over-aggressive sharpening removes more material than necessary and shortens instrument life.
  • Inspect the edge after sharpening under good light or magnification to confirm a clean, even bevel.
Step 06

Inspection & Storage

  • Before each use, inspect instruments for cracks, pitting, discoloration, misalignment (on hinged instruments), or a dulled/damaged edge.
  • Retire any instrument showing corrosion, structural damage, or an edge that no longer holds after sharpening.
  • Store in a dry environment; humidity is one of the most common causes of surface corrosion over time.
  • Keep hinged instruments lightly lubricated between uses (instrument milk/lubricant rated for autoclaving) to prevent stiff joints.
